Rene Gruau - My new obsession.

René Gruau - MY NEW OBSESSION

Rene Gruau is a renowned fashion illustrator whose exaggerated portrayal of fashion design through painting has had a lasting effect on the fashion industry. Because of Gruau's inherent skills and creativity, he contributed to a change in the entire fashion industry.

Gruau became one of the best known and favorite artists of the haute couture world during the 1940s and 50s working with FeminaMarie-Claire and L'Officiel. Gruau’s artwork is recognised and commended internationally in some of Paris and Italy's most prestigious art museums. Including the Louvre in Paris and the Blank in Italy.

During Gruau's lifelong career he collaborated with fashion houses such as Givenchy, Balenciaga, Lanvin, Schiaparelli and Dior. His advertising campaigns for Moulin Rouge and Lido de Paris utilised an old-world aesthetic, celebrating the traditional poster-art graphics of Toulouse-LautrecBonnardand the pre-1900 Parisian artists. He continued to work in advertising, designing the hugely influential cinema poster for Fellini’s La Dolce Vita in 1959. He also worked on campaigns for names such as Air France, Martini and Omega watches. He has been exhibited internationally at the Paris Musee du Costume and The Musee de la Publicite. The 2011 Spring/Summer Haute Couture Collection of Christian Dior by John Galliano is heavily inspired by Rene's works.

A truly inspiring artist.

THE BEEF ON BROWS.

The beef on b r o w s.
What do these thick, dark brows really mean? That's easy, power.

The hot beauty trend (again) is thick, very dark, elongated brows. The last time we saw brows  this intense was in the Brooke Shields days. The early eighties baby! We then moved towards the hideously over-plucked arch in the nineties, and it pains me to say, we're still seeing it in the naughties. No people, just no! Bold, bushy brows are back, embrace them.

So, how do you get the look? It's easy. If you have already invested the time in growing your brows, or, you are naturally blessed with a fabulous wild growth - listen up. Apply a gel with an eyebrow brush and shape upwards. If you have uneven and sparse brows you will need to use an eyebrow pencil or eye shadow to fill them as well. Ensure you are using a colour that is at least one shade lighter than your hair. Whether you are going full-glitz or natural, your eyebrows always need a little tweaking. These magnificent creatures frame our face and open up our eyes.

TIPS ON MAINTAINING BEAUTIFUL BROWS:

1. Never pluck above the eyebrows.
2. Only pluck one hair at a time & in the direction they grow - HOT TIP: wipe toner gently over the area that has been plucked to avoid infection
3. When using an eyebrow pencil, apply with gentle, broken movements to create a natural looking sweep.
4. If you are not a believer in plucking or waxing, at least brush your brows!
5. If you are using an eyebrow pencil, use one that is a shade lighter than your hair colour to achieve a natural look (unless you are like me and have serious Rachel Taylor brow-envy!)

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only, fashion is something in the air. It's the wind that blows in the new fashion, you feel it coming and you smell it. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening" - COCO CHANEL.
