SUMMER STYLING TO THE MAX >

http://www.tothemax.com.au/#
< S U M M E R  S T Y L I N G >

This week I visited one of my FAVE Melbourne Boutiques, TO THE MAX, on Lygon Street in Carlton. The gorgeous girls there helped me play dress-ups and choose my three fave looks for the silly summer season! I have chosen three very different styles to ensure I have something for everyone. Below I have listed what I am wearing, what body shape this style is suited to and how to style it - enjoy >

STYLING TIPS > LOOK ONE (Alice McCall White Sea Maxi): This stunning maxi dress is ideal for a formal occasion or a dressy event (wedding, function, launch/event). The cut of this dress is quite exquisite and extremely flattering, which I didn't assume when I saw it on the hanger. I would definitely style this dress with a pair of very simple nude strappy shoes as the neck is the true feature. Hair up in a messy bun or pulled to one side would be ideal to showcase the intricate neck design. I would also keep accessories to a minimum - smalls studs of a simple drop earring, maybe one bangle (silver or gold) and I wouldn't introduce another colour. The effortless elegance of this dress speaks for itself - keep it very simple.

LOOK TWO (Shona Joy Casblanca Tank Dress): This cool but girlie tank dress is the perfect summer day-to-night look. The simple cut is flattering on all body shapes and can be drawn in with a belt to create more of a waistline if desired. What I love about the tank/shift dress is how effortless and chic these look. You literally throw it on and you're ready! Style this with flat sandals, wedges or for a smart-casual look, some closed-toe points and a blazer. This is also extremely versatile for hair options - lose beach hair, messy bun or even a pony tail would look great.
LOOK THREE (Shona Joy Mirage Playsuit): Finally, the uber cute baby blue/teal playsuit by Shona Joy! I literally want to sleep in this, it is beyond amazing! This playsuit is double lined and hides any bits you don't want to the world to see ;) The shoe string straps and V-neck cut are extremely flattering - both to small and medium-large breasted women. While you might think to style this with a thin belt, I wouldn't. The textured material and tailored cut of this playsuit create a beautiful silhouette and flatters you in all the right places. I am a curvy girl and was hesitant when I saw this piece, however, the quality and cut really do create a lovely shape. This is also a casual day-to-night outfit, pairing it with flat sandals during the day and wedge or strappy heels at night for a bit more glam. Keep the accessories to a minimum, the material is a standout and should not be challenged!
Happy shopping and I hope you've taken away some useful summer styling tips - SJ.

BEE-UDEE-FULL BROWS >

Two words - R A C H A E L  &  L I L Y.

Yep, enough said. These babes pretty much speak for themselves, not to mention rock an amazing set of brows! For years now I have been working towards achieving and sculpting the 'perfect brow'. After some wild months and hideous waxing sessions, I have finally reached my brow goal!

I truly believe our eyebrows heavily influence and dominate our face, dictating our make-up and even giving others some insight into our personality (shape of brows - seductive, big and bold etc.). A strong and thick brow makes a statement and also enhances our eyes and mouth. The irony being, the big statement brow done well almost then becomes invisible, focusing our attention to the eyes and mouth (where it should be). Below I have included a great illustration which suggests the complimentary brow shape depending on your face shape. I personally have a square/heart shaped face, so I meet somewhere in the middle of those for my shape. See what you are & my FAVE products and treatments below >
Rachel Taylor - serious brow envy! She is absolutely stunning and an Aussie! #model #fashion #beauty #proudlilly collins= Audrey

SISJ PRODUCT RECOMMENDATION: Le Sourcil De Chanel - 20 Brun (Perfect Brows)

MY TREATMENTS AKA UP-KEEP: eyebrow wax & tint every 2 - 3 weeks and in-between plucks if required

HOW TO GET BEACH BABE HAIR >

Let's face it, the 'effortless' beach babe hair still takes a little effort to achieve! While this is an unstructured and relaxed style, it's all about technique and product prep. Below I have listed some techniques and products that I recommend to achieve this look >

TECHNIQUE ONE > S A L T / W A X  S P R A Y

Salt or wax spray are fantastic for adding volume, texture and removing any frizz. In my experience you can use these products on dry or damp hair to achieve the beach hair/waves look. Personally though I like to dry-off my hair until it's almost completely dry and then spray in the wax or salt spray. I then use my hands to comb this through in a scrunching technique (almost rubbing your fingers/hands together). Once you've applied the product you can do a cool dry over the top just using your fingers to brush through your hair. In a way you are creating very, very mild dreadlocks, so avoid hair brushes and combs! I then finish this look off with some light hair spray > PRODUCT TIP: TONI & GUY SEA SALT TEXTURISING SPRAY

TECHNIQUE TWO > B U N  /  P L A I T  /  B A C K  C O M B

I am lucky when it comes to styling the beach hair/wave look as I naturally have a wave. However, if I do want a slightly bigger wave or an ultra-messy look, there are a few ways to achieve this. I would still suggest on adding a salt spray or wax (there are also beach hair sprays which are basically the same thing) before putting your hair up in a messy bun, plait or back combing. Again, I would wait until your hair is almost dry and you've added your desired product before you style. Once you have styled your hair into a messy bun or plait, dry-off on the cool setting and leave it to set while you get ready. You could leave this in overnight, however, I find when you open the bun the following day you will have a big kink where the tie meets the hair on the top of your head. The plait however can definitely be left in. For a big beach wave look (like the image above on the left) I would suggest the fat plait technique. Finally, back comb, back comb, back comb! This is my answer to anything and everything! BIGGER IS BETTER when it comes to hair!

TECHNIQUE THREE > C U R L I N G  I R O N  /  G H D

This technique is probably more suited for those with less wave or curl to their hair. As you can see in the image below, I don't need to use any irons or tongs for the basic/messy beach look. However, if I did want a structured wave finished off with a bit of salt spray mess, this would be the technique I use. I still suggest to dry off your hair on a medium heat with the prep product already in your hair - this could also be oil, volumising serum/mousse. Without brushing or combing your hair and once it is completely dry, then you can use your curling iron or GHD to style. Once you have finished styling add some salt or wax spray vigorously to your hair. A great technique is also to dip your head upside-down and shake it around. Once you flip it up give it a few scrunches with your fingers and hands. Complete this look with some light hair spray for hold.

ABOVE TECHNIQUE & PRODUCT: here I used the scrunching method with the Toni & Guy Creative Style Spray Wax

A WISHFUL BLUE BEAUTY >

B L U E B I R D  B E A U T Y

For SS13 styling cobalt blue is the colour to wear this season. A colour that radiates confidence, sincerity and loyalty, it's hard to put a foot wrong when styling with this colour. Here are my fashion/hair/beauty styling tips for a chic CB look >

SISJ'S FAVE CB DRESS: I am absolutely loving Wish's SS13 Castaway collection! My favourite story and print by far is this feminine and exclusive 100% CDC silk bluebird print. The featured dress is called the Bluebird Shift Dress, which is also available in a maxi, cami, V-neck dress and a one shoulder top (Bluebird story).

SHIFT DRESS STYLING TIP: I am a huge fan of the shift dress this season. It's an effortless piece and can be extremely flattering if styled correctly. Make sure you know your measurements if you are purchasing this style online. I suggest opting for your typical top size as the bottom half is normally quite a loose fit. If it's semi-fitted across your chest/shoulders you will achieve a flattering shape over your arms, chest, hips and legs. This style looks super cute with flats and a thin belt for a casual day look. For night wear I would style with some wedges and a cropped blazer if the temp is cool.

BEAUTY STYLING TIP: The great thing about this tran-seasonal colour is that it suits blondes, brunettes and red heads equally. As versatile as cobalt blue is, I am also a big believer in only styling this with either a bold red lip or a soft pink lip. As you all know I am a BIG fan of oranges and corals, however, I don't believe they are a harmonious combination. If you decide on a bold red lip remember to keep your eye make-up quite natural, focussing more so on big lashes (not heavy eye liner/shadow). When colour-matching the soft pink tones for the lips, I would suggest a warm (peachy, brown, bronze) palette for the eyes. Again, still keep this reasonably natural with a soft pink cheek and some light bonzer or illuminating powder for a summer glow.

HAIR STYLING TIP: If you are wearing cobalt blue as an 'accent' colour/pattern, I would definitely suggest an unstructured style - eg. soft waves, beach spray, messy top-knot bun. However, if you are colour blocking I would suggest a more sleek and structured style - eg. low straight pony tail, sleek donut bun or classic Hollywood waves to one side.

TRIBAL / BOHO BABIN' >

TRIBAL/BOHO/HIPPIE OOTD>

It's hard to go wrong with vibrant prints, warm tones and rich accessories, aka tribal/boho babin' (FYI that's straight from the SISJ dictionary!).

I love the urban cut and abstract print of this Mika & Gala playsuit. The tribal/ethnic trend which resurfaces each fashion calendar can be styled at random! The more colour and the crazier the accessories are, the better. I love this effortless style for casual day wear, but also teamed with a cute pair of wedges for a balmy summer night out.

MY CHERUB CHEEKS >

CHERUB CHEEKS > SISJ BEAUTY TIP!

PARABEN FREE / NOT TESTED ON ANIMALS

I am constantly asked what blush I use and what gives me my 'glowing finish'. Well here is the answer! I use the Inglot AMC liquid face blush as a highlighter on top of my Boys Don't Cry powder blush by Nars. I apply the liquid blush with a brush or sponge, gently blending it along the top of my cheekbone (post bronzer/powder blush). This is truly make-up magic and will leave your skin glowing and radiant throughout the day - I cannot recommend this product highly enough.

It retails at a very reasonable $26, online and in-stores (CBD, Chadstone & Southland).

SUMMER COLOUR BLOCKING & POPPING >

SUMMER COLOUR BLOCKING & POPPING >

It's poppin' purple and oh-la-la orange for me today! To my fellow Melbournians, don't let today's typical weather throw you - it will be a stinking hot summer before you know it! I am always keen to get in early when it comes to bathers and maxi dresses for summer. Beat the crowds in early December and avoid that awkward moment at the beach when the girl two towels down is wearing the same bathers as you! There are so many beautiful floral, Aztec and tie-dye patterns available in-store at the moment. Go Crazy - colour, print, big glasses and hats!

P & O COLOUR RULES & STYLING:

Orange and purple are analogous colours, aka close by one another on the colour wheel. This colour combo always makes for a chic and fresh outfit. P & O can be styled so many ways, whether it's colour blocked or a print, like my Mink Pink bathers above. If you do decide to colour block it's important to remember the following guidelines > to complete a fab CB'd outfit; combine two or three colours that complement or contrast rather than match each other. The colours should be solid and vivid to make the boldest statement. *WHAT ARE VIVID COLOURS? Strikingly bright, strong and intense colours - for example: fuchsia, magenta & lime*.

COLOUR HUB WRAP-UP!

HUB-KNUBBING HIT > A big thank you to the fabulous team at the Highpoint Spring Racing Colour Hub last Friday night, I had a wonderful evening!

It was great to meet fashion stylist Margaret Kernich (aka Miss Bossy Boots!) and discuss all this season's trends as well as race day etiquette. As I am a traditionalist at heart so the fashions of Melbourne Cup Day excite me the most! A tailored silhouette dress or skirt and blazer, gloves and a hat are a must for me. While I do love the elegance of Cup Day, you can't help but love the fun fashion and freedom of Oaks Day! For me Oaks Day is the green light to go crazy with colour, pattern, open toe shoes and a crowd stopping head piece. There are some stunning floral and vibrant dresses/skirts available at Alannah Hill, Kookai & Rodeo Show - all of which you can find at Highpoint Shopping Centre.

The highlight of the evening though was definitely meeting the uber talented milliner, Penelope D'Alton. I was photographed by the lovely Timothy Burgess in two of her designs (above & below). All Penelope's designs are custom made in Melbourne using the finest materials. I absolutely fell in LOVE with the yellow head piece (I literally tried it on and off 4 times!). We had a great chat about millinery trends for this season as well as discussing headwear etiquette - for example, which side to position the head piece on, how far to dip it down/across the face and obviously what shape and type of hat suits each individual face shape.

Thank you again to the Highpoint Colour Hub styling team for having me, it was a informative and fun session! See you on the track! SISJ x
