FODMAP FOODS - The answer to bloating &IBS is here!

A word we know all too well, bloating.

I am pleased to introduce you to the FODMAP theory. The FODMAP theory suggests that by following a low FODMAP diet, unpleasant symptoms such as bloating and abdominal discomfort will decrease. Foods in the FODMAP group can increase the volume of liquid and gas in the small and large intestines, resulting in gas, pain and bloating. Below is a list of foods that can increase these symptoms, in isolation or in combined meals. By no means should you remove these foods from your diet, just keep them to a minimum.

COMMON HIGH 'FODMAP' FOODS:

Dried fruit, prunes, paw paw, apricots, cherries, wheat, fructose, artificial sweeteners, chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans, avocado, garlic, fennel, leeks, banana, watermelon, butter, corn, oats, eggplant and sweet potato.

I am hoping I haven't scared you too much with the above list! Let me tell you, I am someone who just breathes and I bloat, but that doesn't mean you need to cut out these foods all together. Like any healthy diet, you eat these foods in moderation and small amounts. For example, I replace normal cow's milk with soy where I can. I also ensure my serving sizes of dried fruits and oats/granola etc. are on the smaller size. FINAL TIP > green tea is fantastic for decreasing bloating and those uncomfortable girlie pains!

MAKE YOUR MAKE-UP LAST LONGER.

Full Doutzen Kroes

MAKE YOUR MAKE-UP LAST LONGER -
four easy steps & tips:

1. PRIMER: applying primer is the MOST IMPORTANT step in maintaining fresh and long-lasting make-up. It makes a huge difference to the look and wear of your make-up. Primer seals your skin and creates a smooth layer to ensure an even coverage.

2. CLEAN BRUSHES: real hair make-up brushes are an absolute beauty-must (let's call it an investment!). And, like any other investment, we want a great return on that investment. Foundation brushes should be cleaned at least once a week to remove old make-up, bacteria, oils and dirt.

4. MONITOR YOUR MASCARA: there's nothing worse than clumpy or dry mascara, ew! Eyelashes and mascara applicators naturally have bacteria on them. Ideally these brushes need to be thrown out after three months of daily use (max).

5. SETTING SPRAY & HYDRATING MIST: make-up setting spray and facial hydrating mist hold foundation and eye make-up in place throughout the day/night. These sprays are available in both a matte finish and a dewy finish.

GARDEN INSPO & SHOPPING TIPS >

< GARDEN INSPO >
In-light of my big move in three weeks, I am madly researching landscape design tips and hot new trends. Let's pretend for my blog's sake, that I don't have a budget (it's much more fun that way!).

But seriously, above are some images I've put together as an inspiration/mood board. Believe it or not, my garden needs are pretty simple. I want some wow-factor at an affordable price. I also want a relatively low-maintenance garden and one that I actually understand. This coming from the girl who struggles to keep a herb garden alive for more than 14 days! Eeek! It's time to grow up now!

Below are some of my recommendations & also where I shop in Melbourne for a modern-gal's garden:

The Basics of Skin, with Dr Richard Young

To understand what makes beautiful skin, you have to understand the anatomy of skin >

Time and time again I see claims by beauty enhancement products that just don’t make sense, if you know the basics. I will give you the most beginner lesson on skin anatomy, and it will help you to decide in a flash whether a claim is likely to be bogus or not.

Stratum Corneum: This is the top layer of skin, the one that you see. It is mainly comprised of a layer of dead cells on top, which can appear dull and lifeless if they build up too much. This layer is also a very effective barrier to trauma, bacteria and anything else that tries to invade us (take note creams that supposedly “penetrate”).

Epidermis: The second layer, and is all living. It is also a very effective barrier to pretty much everything, especially water based products (slightly more open to oil based).

Dermis: The thicker living area where most of your collagen and elastin lie, the proteins that give skin its stretchiness and ability to bounce back. It is also where a lot of the water resides and so can deplete and sag. The important hair follicles are here as well so this layer needs to be healthy at all times. Being protected by the first two layers, almost nothing applied to the surface can reach this vital layer (I did say almost!).

Fat layer: No one wants to hear those words, but the subcutaneous fat layer is super important for appearance. We can lose fat with ageing, especially in parts of the face, and dehydration can also make this layer flatten and sag.

Ok, that all sounds very technical, but the take home message is: the vast majority of beauty products that say they penetrate the skin to get to the vital areas don’t! They sit on the surface and make it look shiny and smell nice. Over the next few weeks we’ll talk about which ones can get in, which ones actually have ingredients that work and how to keep all the layers healthy and looking good.

Sunday crisis > AVERTED!

SUNDAY WASN'T SO FUN-DAY!
11.12pm. Sunday. Dirty hair. Ready for bed. Monday. Meetings. Need to look good! AGHH! (that is pretty much how it panned out!) >

SO... WHAT DOES DRY SHAMPOO ACTUALLY DO:

Dry shampoo is a powder that usually comes in an aerosol spray can, that absorbs the oil/hair dirt (sebum) from your hair. It also adds volume, and gives your hair a fresh and clean appearance without water. It works particularly well in blonde hair and lightens up the roots.

WHEN SHOULD YOU USE DRY SHAMPOO:

Dry shampoo should really only be used in SOS situations. Or, on a Sunday evening at 11.12pm because you didn't plan ahead! It is important that you do not replace your normal shampoo/cleaning routine with this product. It is designed purely for intermittent use between normal shampoo washes. Depending on the frequency of your 'normal washes', it is ideal for a second or third day touch-up between.

APPLICATION TIPS & SIDE EFFECTS:

There are many ways to skin a cat, but, here are my tips from experience. The first step is to comb through your hair to get rid of any existing tangles. Then, spray the aerosol can approx. 15 - 20cm from the desired area (hair line, hair part, behind the ears - oily prone areas). I found when I sprayed the powder directly onto the scalp it caused severe irritation and left a white residue (similar to dandruff). Once you have sprayed the shampoo onto the desired area (from a small distance), either with a brush or your hands, give it a good comb through. This will spread out the powder and evenly absorb any oil.

MAC Pressed Pigment > #beautytip

MAC has created a new creamy translucent Pressed Pigment product, which I just lurve! It's very Kevin Murphy Colour Bug-esque. So, if you are not afraid of a little colour, this is a must-try product.

When applied wet, the cream will set in a high-gloss colour finish, giving full coverage. There are 12 beautiful shades that will accent your eyes/eye make-up without looking like you're attending a 90's dress-up party! And don't forget, like any eye-shadow, apply with high-quality brushes (real hair) and blend, blend, blend!

Mother's Day 2013 >

Happy Mother's Day to our beautiful mum
(aka Frau Mutti)

Today also marks the one year anniversary of our beautiful nan suffering a heart attack and sadly passing away one week later. In November we all travelled home to England, and laid her ashes to rest beside my grandfather. She was 96 years old and never lost her wicked sense of humour. We love and miss you every single day Nanny.

GET THE LOOK > Ralph Lauren Home, Wedgewood, Diptyque & Coco Republic

GET THE LOOK with Sarah Jane >
 LIFESTYLE & INTERIORS

I have recently bought a beautiful home in the bayside suburbs of Melbourne, so this will explain my heightened obsession with home wares and interior design. This time, scrolling through countless websites and magazines for gorgeous trinkets and special cushions is a 'need', not a 'want'! Or, at least I am sticking to that story!

I came across the top image on Pinterest and have gone on a mini e-shopping spree - all in the name of community spirit and sharing, of course. I am definitely partial to anything French provincial, hence my very neutral colour palette and choice of designs.

CANDLES: Jasmine ($90) & Baies Noire ($135) - Diptyque, available at Mecca Cosmetica

TABLE: Sloane Round - Coco Republic (enquire online)

PHOTO FRAME: Intaglio black & silver frame - Wedgewood £40.00 (purchase online)

CUSHIONS: Cable beige cushion - Ralph Lauren Home £89.00 & the Orelle Cushion - Missoni Home £154.00 (purchase online)
