Melbourne Cup & Derby Day 2012 - FASHION & STYLING

Melbourne Cup Vs. Derby Day fashion 2012

Congratulations to Lauren Andrews who won the 2012 title of Myer Melbourne Cup Fashions on the Field (far right image). Lauren looked stunning in a navy headpiece by local milliner Kim Fletcher and a neon-yellow tweed pencil dress, from British label Erdem. This look was styled perfectly with a YSL clutch and a low, sleek bun. Love it.

Our Aussie-beauty Jen Hawkins delivered another winning Derby Day outfit (middle image), but did we actually expect anything less? Her skin and make-up is fresh and she is glowing. I particularly love her in this colour palette - cream, black & grey. My only criticism of this look would have been the high split up the skirt on her left leg. It was an awkward height and added nothing to the look. A clean, narrow hem just above her knees would have completed this elegant and sleek look.

Today, Jen went for a fairly controversial look (far left image). This choice of styling has been the hot topic on social media today and has the nation divided! The pale-blue and black ruffle dress is by designer Maticevski, and the headpiece by Peter Lang. I personally love both pieces, however, I would have styled them separately. It was also an interesting colour choice for Melbourne Cup, traditionally known for its bight colour. Jen's hair and make-up look amazing and work well with the headpiece. I would like to have seen this styled with a lower neckline in the dress. The ruffle detail on her shoulder is overpowering and slightly unflattering around her upper body. As usual though, her beautiful smile and warm personality trumps any minute fashion-faux pas! I cannot wait to see what she is wearing later this week at Oaks Day.

I would love to hear your thoughts.

SJM.
