Folliculitis (aka Hot Tub Rash) >
Wherever
there is hair, there can be Folliculitis!

This
annoying and often persistent skin infection can prove a long term nightmare to those
affected. Folliculitis most often affects the warm moist areas that bacteria thrive in, such as
the armpits and groins. Unfortunately any areas that we shave or exfoliate
are fair targets for this skin infection, so guys can also be affected in the beard
areas. Wearing tight clothing or staying in sweaty workout gear for long
periods can also encourage bacteria to invade the hair follicles, as can substances
that block follicles like make-up and oily skincare products.
Once
bacteria have invaded the hair follicles they are well protected in their home
made bunkers. Using antibacterial skin wash and even oral antibiotics is
often frustratingly useless. These
stubborn infections are very clever, and can actually live on your razor, reinfecting
you each time. Try using an electric razor or at least a new blade each time. If you are
getting frequent recurrences you may want to try depilatory creams.
Unfortunately waxing may spread the bugs just like a blade.
Eventually
you may need a topical antibiotic cream from your doctor and it may have to be
used for quite a while. Acne preparations are also useful but your best
bet is just trying to keep the area clean and dry in the first place.
